Photoshoot Review: Murder by Cosplay

sleep

At Another Anime Con 2014, I scheduled three photoshoots with Murder by Cosplay. It was my first time working with them, and I am so glad I did! Each day, I had one photoshoot. On Friday night, I had my Aoba Seragaki (DRAMAtical Murder) photoshoot. On Saturday, it was Mikasa Ackerman time (Attack on Titan)~! On the last day, Sunday, Murder by Cosplay shot my Maki Nishikino (Love Live!) cosplay. Be sure to check out their Tumblr and their Facebook!

The people behind Murder by Cosplay are not just photographers… They are cosplayers too! They understand how to conduct photoshoots for cosplayers since they have experience being cosplayers themselves, and they are also very friendly and understanding. The photoshoots feel relaxed and stress-free; they asked me what I wanted to shoot and what sort of poses I wanted to do, so I never felt uncomfortable or awkward.

First, I’ll share each of my Murder by Cosplay photoshoot experiences.

phone2

Totally not my phone.

1. Aoba

I felt so bad when I got to the photoshoot because I was running late. 😦 The photoshoot took place after dinner, and the restaurant I was eating dinner at had really slow service… It took a while to get the bill and then an even longer wait to get the change, so I had to call Murder by Cosplay and ask if we could move the photoshoot to a later time. They were very accommodating and said that it was fine, so I called them again when I finished with the dinner issue and quickly went to the lobby to meet them. My first time meeting them was fine; they were very friendly and introduced themselves and explained that they are open to trying to capture whatever photos I would like. I really wanted to get a photo in the elevator… And it took us several tries (pushing the elevator button a lot), but we finally got lucky and found an empty elevator! Before we found this elevator though, we took other photos while we waited. Here’s that precious elevator picture:

elevator

This photoshoot was a lot of fun, and I’m glad that they were willing to listen to my ideas for poses and help me out. They even let me borrow their iPhone (since it was blue and matched Aoba perfectly)! They even caught a silly picture that I absolutely love…

aobutt

I present to you: Aobutt!

This Friday night photoshoot was a fun success! I am a very indecisive person, so I usually have trouble with thinking of poses; I am grateful for their patience with me. The photoshoot did not take long, but they captured lots of fantastic photos.

Attack on Photoshoot!

2. Mikasa

At 10 am on Saturday, I met up with Murder by Cosplay for an Attack on Titan photoshoot! It was chilly outside, but my cosplay kept me warm (although the harness/straps were as annoying as ever). We found a nice area next to the convention center where there were lovely trees, so we took some photos there! We also found other locations outside the convention center, like a small wall in front of a grassy area, where we tried to capture some photos. I was happy that the photographers did not try to rush me. The Survey Corps straps are really annoying to deal with, and even though I modified them with velcro, they still slip around. I had to fix them in between photos, and I am glad that Murder by Cosplay did not mind.

_MG_2858

They also caught some cute candid photos! Here’s me fixing my straps:

#HarnessProblems

Ahh… those straps will be the death of me… (But at least I got some lovely photos! <3)

Sunny days are the best days.

3. Maki

On Sunday, I started off my last day of the con with a photoshoot with Murder by Cosplay! They were not familiar with Love Live!, so I quickly explained it to them and then we started picking locations for the photoshoot. I felt nervous because it was my first time cosplaying Maki and I was feeling stressed out over a variety of things, but Murder by Cosplay had a great positive energy and I was able to relax and come up with poses. They helped brainstorm for photoshoot locations and also helped with positioning some of my poses. It was easy to find nearby locations, and we made the photoshoot a fast one because my outfit was not very cold-weather-friendly (miniskirt problems…).

hey

It was a lovely sunny day on Sunday despite the cold, so we caught lots of colorful pictures. The autumn leaves were a beautiful touch in many of the photos. ❤ I liked the variety of shots I got from Murder by Cosplay: some of them look more like portraits, while others are more artsy-looking.

benched

Finally, my iPod matches a cosplay!

They also caught some silly photos, like me holding my skirt down. (By the way, it was really windy this day, so the wind was blowing my skirt a lot. The wind was evil.)

wind

I hate you, wind. >_<

If you have any questions about the photoshoots, feel free to ask me or Murder by Cosplay. All of the photoshoots were really fun, and I hope you like the photos!

There are many things I love about Murder by Cosplay‘s photography policies. They have reasonable prices, they are open-minded, and they are honest and respectful. They allow you to repost their photos, as long as you credit them. Their watermarks are in convenient places; you can see the watermarks, but they are not obstructive or distracting. The watermarks look professional and do not detract from the photographs. They also allow you to edit their photos, which is really exciting! I enjoy photo-editing, so I’m always happy when photographers allow me to edit the photos after receiving them. When the lighting is too dark, I mess around with the brightness and contrast to give the illusion of better lighting. For example, the Aoba photoshoot was done at night, indoors, so the lighting was not very good. We had the indoor lighting to work with, so the lighting was a bit awkward. Below, you can see a comparison photo of before-and-after my editing:

comparison

I also became addicted to filters last year… So I will usually apply filters to photos (they’re so easy to use!) as lazy editing.

musicHere is a little blurb from them:

“Murder by Cosplay is a two-man studio co-founded by cosplayers Emile and Alex of the New England area.  Emile has been doing photography for the majority of his life, having studied the art of portraiture and site capture in college.  Alex’s field of study specializes in composition and design.  Together, both work to get the best images possible during photoshoots.”

I would definitely recommend Murder by Cosplay for anyone looking for affordable photoshoots. ^_^ Please check them out!

No Time for Creativity: Review

Despite the name of the shop, Kathryn (the shop-owner), has a lot of creativity! If she has no time for creativity, I have no idea how she does all this. She’s a talented crafter  who makes so many different things. Check out No Time for Creativity for animal ears, PeanutPalz, hats, headbands, bows, ornaments, and more! Feel free to use the coupon code LOLITASTYLES2015 for 10% off order of $10 or more. Keep in mind that this coupon expires on December 31, 2015. DSC_0071 Kathryn shipped out the lot of amazing products in a sturdy cardboard box to guarantee protection: DSC_0027_Fotor_Collage As you can see in the above collage, the inside of the box was filled with protective foam pieces. No items were damaged during the shipping process. DSC_0029 The hats were the only items unwrapped. All the other accessories were wrapped in cute tissue paper! I was very pleased with the packaging. Here is everything unwrapped: DSC_0036 Isn’t this an awesome batch of items? No Time for Creativity sent two mini tricorn hats, one jumbo hair bow (black and pink tartan), one heart-ear headband, one cat-ear headband, two sets of bows (green tartan and red tartan), one cute little PeanutPal, and one black gothic headdress with red rose accents. You can find more PeanutPalz on No Time for Creativity‘s shop; there are so many different characters available! They are also at affordable prices, so your wallet won’t hurt. All of the accessories are super cute and affordable as well! DSC_0065 Unfortunately, I did not have the time to model all of these items. I tried my best to show off a variety of the No Time for Creativity products though, and I hope you enjoy this review nevertheless. I plan to model all the products in the future, but I was short on time since I had to move abroad for the semester. During the summer or the fall, I will definitely try to post more photos, so I hope you will continue to follow my blog. peaceFirst, take a look at these adorable red cat ears! I love stylized accessories, and this cute headband looks like cat ears, but in a unique aesthetic. The ears are full of lace, and there’s a cute bow and dangling charm on one ear. In addition, beads decorate this headband. The headband is in red too… my all-time favorite color!

BeautyPlus_20150206170248_save

I love how creative this headband is! I’ve never thought about using hearts as the ears of a headband. This headband would be so perfect for a Valentine’s Day coordinate! The hearts are filled with lace, just as the cat ears are. The blue and pink bow is a delightful touch~! I think this whimsical headband would work well for both OTT sweet lolita and fairy kei.

focal Cute jumbo bows are my life… Seriously, I developed a love for over-sized bows when I first got into lolita fashion. I think this bow is adorable and could be easily used for lolita coordinates or for gyaru coordinates (or even just for fun if you’re wearing anything cute and/or dressy)! As you can see in the above photo, the bow’s width is basically the same as my head! It’s huge, and stands out. DSC_0101 All eyes will be on you if you wear this gorgeous bow~! The bow has a French clip backing, which is one of my favorite types of clips! It is easy to clip into thick hair and wigs. The double strings of faux pearls are a lovely touch. BeautyPlus_20150217203544_saveAs some of you may know, one of my all-time favorite patterns is red tartan! I just love the way it looks. No Time for Creativity sent me a pair of adorable red tartan bows that I decided to use for a casual closet cosplay of Igiko (Nyotalia England from Hetalia). They were the perfect touch to the pigtails~! What do you think of this closet cosplay? bowWhen I received this package from No Time for Creativity, the first thing I tried on was this pair of blue/green plaid bows. These little bows were a surprising find, but it worked out well because I have a shirt that is blue/green plaid. (I actually picked up this shirt for free forever ago at a yard sale… xD) barrettes In any case, the bow and the shirt matched well and I am pleased with this casual-cute look. The dangling beads add to the whimsical cuteness of these bows! gothic My favorite piece of all is probably this beautiful headdress. Black x Red is my favorite color combination, and I love how the headdress looks with the elegant black veil and dramatic splash of red roses. The headdress has a clip on the back, so it attaches very easily. It stays put too; I never had a problem with this accessory shifting about. This gothic accessory is perfect for a gothic lolita coordinate (especially a black/red one)! You may recognize this headdress from my blog post about Penny Dreads’ Miss Tea wig and my blog post about the Amethyst Ways necklace. The coat I am wearing in this photo is from Putumayo, and it was a lucky find from Lacemarket.

Here is a brief note from Kathryn: “I would also like to say that shipping is free to anyone in the US, and I absolutely love custom orders. Easily 1/3 of my items have come from custom orders. I have found that all of my customers have a fun, creative side, and I want to help them express it.”

Free shipping is awesome, so if you live in the USA, please take advantage of this great deal! Feel free to submit custom orders to No Time for Creativity.

Captain Miaow: Animal Ears, Tails, and Paws

DSC_0092

Captain Miaow is a super cute shop that you should all check out! They sell hair accessories, animal ears and tails and paws, clothing, and more. If you want to buy something from them, use the code “Alice” to get 10% off! Here is what Captain Miaow sponsored me: DSC_0002 Isn’t that a huge loot? I was surprised by the amount of items! So many cute animal accessories to try on~! Captain Miaow shipped the package via USPS Priority Mail: DSC_0001

This bubble mailer kept everything well-protected! No complaints with the shipping method or packaging.

Now, let’s take a look at all the adorable items Captain Miaow sent:

DSC_0004

Captain Miaow gave me an adorable pair of offwhite cat ears! These fluffy ears have pink lining and can be attached to a black headband, or attached directly to your hair or wig since each ear has a barrette at the bottom. The paws and tail look like a set! They’re both white in color, and the paws have adorable peachy-pink pads. They slip on like gloves, and your fingers can fit into the different paw fingers. The tail can attach to your clothes with an included safety pin, and there’s also an adorable bow that you can pin to the tail. The tail has wiring, so it can be curled and posed.

DSC_0007

This set is too cute for me to handle! The black ears have pink lining, and these ears come permanently attached to an adorable lacy maid headband. The headband has black bows on the sides, but you can also attach additional bows to them for decoration. The bows included in this set are these adorable twin bows with rose and pearl ornaments. I love the polka-dot ribbon used in these bows!

DSC_0009

These fox ears are perfect! I love the vibrant orange color with the brown tips. The ears can be attached directly to your hair or wig, or to the black headband. Each set of detachable ears came with its own headband, by the way. All of the black headbands look and feel the same; they are flexible and wrapped, and they are comfortable to wear.

DSC_0013

These white ears with light gray tips are so cute! They would work for cat ears, wolf ears, dog ears, or even fox ears! Any animal that could have white pointy ears could have these ears. After checking all of these animal ear products, I can vouch for their quality. All of the ears have no loose threads, and everything is well-stitched. I’m truly impressed by the quality of these animal accessories from Captain Miaow. I’m sure these ears will look great even after wearing them many times!

DSC_0016

Here are some additional bows that Captain Miaow included in the sponsored package! The top two bows can be clipped onto the sides of the ears, your clothes, or the cat tail. Honestly, you can use these bows to decorate just about anything! The bow with the ribbon would be the perfect choker necklace, but you can also tie it in your hair or wig. These bows are definitely very versatile accessories!

For my first look, I pinned two of the bows to the black maid kitty ears (one on each side), I wore the choker, I pinned an additional bow to the black bow on the apron, and I pinned the white tail onto my petticoat. I also wore the white paws for some of the photos, but it was difficult for me to take photos (since I was using the self-timer on my camera), so I could not wear the paws for all the photos.

DSC_0050I love the adorable choker! It was easy to tie around my neck and felt comfortable. And check out the super cute tail:

DSC_0076

Seriously, I love this tail so much! It’s easily posable. The bow was easy to pin onto the tail, and the tail was also easy to wear. I pinned the tail to my petticoat~!

DSC_0078

And here’s a photo of me wearing the fluffy paws:

DSC_0072

I love red foxes, so I was excited to see that Captain Miaow included a pair of fox ears. I’m glad they have brown tips too; I think the ears look better this way! The style of the ears definitely looks fox-like and you’ll be able to use these ears to complete a fox girl or fox demon costume.

DSC_0099

I was also excited to find the pair of white ears with gray tips in the package… I used these ears for a casual Jade Harley cosplay:

DSC_0183

Aren’t these ears perfect? I think they suit Jade so well! They’re great ears for my favorite space doggie. I look forward to using these ears next time I cosplay Jade Harley too!

Check out both albums for lots of photos; I will add more photos as time goes on. I hope you enjoyed this review! Remember that you can use the coupon code “Alice” to get 10% off your purchase! Definitely check out Captain Miaow if you’re looking for accessories to complete a costume, or to wear just for fun!
