LBC: Your First Impression Of Lolita Versus Now

lbc

This week’s prompt for Lolita Blog Carnival is a fun one:
Your First Impression Of Lolita Versus Now!

To be honest, I can’t quite remember my first impression of lolita… It was a really long time ago. It was probably when I was 13 or 14 years old? I was definitely in middle school at the time.

I stumbled upon a Gothic & Lolita Bible one day in a bookstore, and that’s how I discovered lolita fashion. I’m not exactly sure of my first thoughts about the fashion, but I think my initial impression was lolita as an over-the-top and absolutely beautiful aesthetic. I did not know the term “alternative fashion” at the time, so I am pretty sure that in my mind, I thought of lolita as – gasp – a costume. It was definitely outside the mainstream, and even though I loved the style, I couldn’t imagine people wearing it on a daily basis.

In addition to this, I think my understanding of the fashion was simply in terms of “Gothic Lolita” versus “Sweet Lolita.” I knew about “Old School Lolita,” with its rectangular headdresses and eyelet lace and all, but I wasn’t quite sure about other styles that fit into lolita. I also had little to no knowledge of other J-fashions.

When I became interested in learning more about lolita fashion, I purchased my first Gothic & Lolita Bible! This is the one I got:

It’s Volume 4 of the English language publication by TokyoPop. I still have this book on my shelf at home! After reading through this book, I was hungry for more, so I started to look for places on the Internet where I could see more examples of the fashion. At first, I had no idea where to start and was quite clueless. In high school, I discovered the EGL community on Livejournal, and that was really helpful! At first, I felt overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information (and especially: the rules!). Eventually, I felt more and more comfortable with the fashion style, but I still admired from afar since I wasn’t sure how I could afford anything lolita.

Now, my impression of lolita is very different! I learned about other alternative fashion styles since my first encounter with lolita, and I now understand that lolita is not a costume. It’s a fashion style: with its trends, its “popular” brands, its indie brands, its sub-styles, and its quirks. There are people who wear lolita everyday, there are people who wear lolita every week, and there are people who wear lolita once in a while – and all of these are totally acceptable. Lolitas also don’t have a “type.” You don’t have to be “ladylike” to be a lolita. Your gender and gender presentation does not correlate with your ability to dress in lolita. There are lolitas of all personalities too! There’s a great deal of diversity within the lolita communities, both online and offline, and I think that’s one thing I’ve enjoyed most by learning more about lolita fashion.

There’s one last discovery I would like to share about lolita: lolita fashion in its simplest form is clothing and accessories that people coordinate together to form cohesive outfits. But in the end, lolita clothing is just clothing. You don’t have to wear the clothing pieces as lolita. For example, it’s easy to wear a dress from a lolita brand without a petticoat and pull off otome style. The same goes for the reverse (I’ve used an otome dress for lolita before). If you have a lolita headdress, that doesn’t mean you have to use it exclusively for lolita. It could go well with another outfit too!

Alice au Pays du Salève

As some of you may know, I spent my spring semester studying and interning abroad in Geneva, Switzerland. My last two days in Geneva was spent photoshoot-ing with the amazing Studio du Petit Oiseau. I worked with them a few times over the course of my semester abroad, and every photoshoot was a lovely experience. This will be a photo-heavy post because I love too many photos from this set!

I wanted to write this blog post earlier, but did not find the time to finish this post until now. Looking back at these photos brings back lovely memories of sunny days spent outside… I still miss living in Europe. Genève, tu me manques! _DSC7019

Basically, here is how these photoshoots worked out: I took a bus to the Swiss/French border, and that’s where Studio du Petit Oiseau met up with me. For the Alice au Pays du Salève shoots, we drove up Salève (a mountain, which I called my home mountain throughout my stay since I could spot it from anywhere in Genève) each day to shoot. The first day was difficult since there was a mysterious car rally going on; I’m still not sure what was happening to be honest. The next day, we went up the mountain and were able to take many more photos.

“Mais je n’ai nulle envie d’aller chez les fous”, fit remarquer Alice.
“Oh ! vous ne sauriez faire autrement, dit le Chat : Ici, tout le monde est fou. Je suis fou. Vous êtes folle.”
“Comment savez-vous que je suis folle ?” demanda Alice.
“Il faut croire que vous l’êtes, répondit le Chat ; sinon, vous ne seriez pas venue ici.”

And now, let’s look at some of the photos from the second time we went to Salève! (And this was my last day in Europe. The day after this shoot, I flew back to the United States!)

In the background of some of these photos, you can see Lac Léman and Genève~!

This shoot was part photoshooting and part sight-seeing…

It was really cold up in the mountain! I should have brought a warmer jacket with me… (Down in Geneva, it was really hot. What a stark contrast in temperature!)

_DSC1454wSalève is definitely one of my favorite places. It’s so breathtakingly beautiful, and I feel like I could go there 100 times and still never get bored of looking around._DSC1412 _DSC1429w _DSC1405“Alice au Pays du Salève” is what Studio du Petit Oiseau named this photoshoot. I thought it was such an adorable name, since it’s a play on the French title for Alice in Wonderland, “Alice au pays des merveilles.” This blog’s name is Alice in Lolitaland, so this title is too perfect.

Merci beaucoup, Studio du Petit Oiseau!

Aren’t these cows so cute? The time spent photoshooting on Salève will always be in my memories, even if they feel like dreams now. If I ever return to Switzerland, I definitely want to visit Salève again. Is there a place you wish you could return to?

Check out my Facebook albums for more photos from these two photoshoots: First album & Second album.

Vannak Photography: Just a Dream Away

LiLiLolita4

Day Dream Carnival: Just a Dream Away…

As you know, Angelic Pretty’s Day Dream Carnival is one of my dream prints! One of my dream dresses is the Day Dream Carnival JSK in sax blue. Over a year ago, I found the headbow in sax blue on Mbok, and that was the first Day Dream Carnival item I owned. I coordinate it with some Bodyline things, but I wasn’t able to find the dream JSK I wanted. I still have yet to find it, but I did snatch up this salopette! I was worried about purchasing it since I’ve never worn a salopette before, but it was too tempting since it came with the tights and the seller was able to do a payment plan. It took me a while to pay for the set, but I am so glad I finally have this. Maybe someday I can find the JSK… But for now, I love this salopette! I wasn’t sure if I could pull off a salopette, but it’s comfy and cute.

A Surreal Photoshoot with Vannak Photography

Vannak Photography traveled to my campus for this photoshoot. I truly appreciate his time and efforts! We took most of the photos in the Botanic Gardens, but we also shot by the dorms. I definitely enjoy shooting on campus since I’m familiar with the environment (and the gardens are absolutely beautiful, especially during the summer time).

The photoshoot took a few hours, and I tried some new things I’ve never done before. The end result was a total of five beautifully edited photos! Each photo is absolutely stunning, which doesn’t surprise me since Vannak’s work is always impressive! You should definitely check out his website.

I even brought macarons with me to eat during this photoshoot! It was a hot summer day and the cream in the macarons melted everywhere, but they still tasted delicious. The tree in the above photo (the one with the swing) is one of my favorite trees on campus.

Below, you’ll see my favorite photo from this photoshoot! Vannak Photography brought a stool, and I sat on the stool for the photo. Leaning back and sticking my legs out like that was actually quite a workout… I felt so out-of-shape. But it was worth it: the end result is so dream-like!
