LBC: Your First Impression Of Lolita Versus Now

lbc

This week’s prompt for Lolita Blog Carnival is a fun one:
Your First Impression Of Lolita Versus Now!

To be honest, I can’t quite remember my first impression of lolita… It was a really long time ago. It was probably when I was 13 or 14 years old? I was definitely in middle school at the time.

I stumbled upon a Gothic & Lolita Bible one day in a bookstore, and that’s how I discovered lolita fashion. I’m not exactly sure of my first thoughts about the fashion, but I think my initial impression was lolita as an over-the-top and absolutely beautiful aesthetic. I did not know the term “alternative fashion” at the time, so I am pretty sure that in my mind, I thought of lolita as – gasp – a costume. It was definitely outside the mainstream, and even though I loved the style, I couldn’t imagine people wearing it on a daily basis.

In addition to this, I think my understanding of the fashion was simply in terms of “Gothic Lolita” versus “Sweet Lolita.” I knew about “Old School Lolita,” with its rectangular headdresses and eyelet lace and all, but I wasn’t quite sure about other styles that fit into lolita. I also had little to no knowledge of other J-fashions.

When I became interested in learning more about lolita fashion, I purchased my first Gothic & Lolita Bible! This is the one I got:

It’s Volume 4 of the English language publication by TokyoPop. I still have this book on my shelf at home! After reading through this book, I was hungry for more, so I started to look for places on the Internet where I could see more examples of the fashion. At first, I had no idea where to start and was quite clueless. In high school, I discovered the EGL community on Livejournal, and that was really helpful! At first, I felt overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information (and especially: the rules!). Eventually, I felt more and more comfortable with the fashion style, but I still admired from afar since I wasn’t sure how I could afford anything lolita.

Now, my impression of lolita is very different! I learned about other alternative fashion styles since my first encounter with lolita, and I now understand that lolita is not a costume. It’s a fashion style: with its trends, its “popular” brands, its indie brands, its sub-styles, and its quirks. There are people who wear lolita everyday, there are people who wear lolita every week, and there are people who wear lolita once in a while – and all of these are totally acceptable. Lolitas also don’t have a “type.” You don’t have to be “ladylike” to be a lolita. Your gender and gender presentation does not correlate with your ability to dress in lolita. There are lolitas of all personalities too! There’s a great deal of diversity within the lolita communities, both online and offline, and I think that’s one thing I’ve enjoyed most by learning more about lolita fashion.

There’s one last discovery I would like to share about lolita: lolita fashion in its simplest form is clothing and accessories that people coordinate together to form cohesive outfits. But in the end, lolita clothing is just clothing. You don’t have to wear the clothing pieces as lolita. For example, it’s easy to wear a dress from a lolita brand without a petticoat and pull off otome style. The same goes for the reverse (I’ve used an otome dress for lolita before). If you have a lolita headdress, that doesn’t mean you have to use it exclusively for lolita. It could go well with another outfit too!

Photoshoot: Sumiko.Foto at Otakon

At Otakon 2015, I worked with Sumiko.Foto for the first time! I agreed to write a review in exchange for a free photoshoot (and a Free! photoshoot). My first photoshoot with them was on Friday, when I cosplayed Nagisa Hazuki from Free! I cosplay Nagisa to every con I go to, and he’s definitely one of my all-time favorite characters to be! The second shoot with them was on Saturday afternoon, when I cosplayed Kill la Kill with two friends. You can see my Otakon cosplay lineup here! It was a really busy con for me.

First, let’s talk about the Free! shoot!

I met up with Sumiko.Foto on Friday morning by the fountains outside Otakon. There was another cosplayer there, a Gou, and she took photos of both of us at the same time. We got lots of solo shots, and also some group shots. Sumiko.Foto handled it very well, and I didn’t mind sharing the time slot with another cosplayer since the photographer definitely split up the time evenly and everything ran smoothly. As for the end results, both cosplayers got amazing photos! All of the photos on this blog post were taken and edited by Sumiko.Foto ; I did not tamper with the files at all. I’m impressed by the results!

On Saturday afternoon, the Kill la Kill shoot took place! I cosplayed Mako, and my friends cosplayed Ryuko and Satsuki. Unfortunately, I ran late to the photoshoot because my hotel was far away from the con and it was difficult for me to commute back and forth. I had to change to Mako for this shoot, and on my way back to the con from the hotel, I got stuck in traffic. Luckily, things worked out since Ryuko and Satsuki got their solo photos as I was traveling. When I got there, we got to do the group shots!

I got less photos back from this shoot than from the Free! shoot, but I don’t mind since the photos still look great. It was also more difficult to get great photos from the second shoot since we were in direct sunlight most of the time, and the area on top of the fountains was crowded and busy.

It’s too bad there are random passerbys in some of these photos, but that couldn’t be avoided. Otakon was definitely one of the most crowded cons I’ve ever been to… There were so many people everywhere!

My friends agreed that this photoshoot was fun, so we were all happy with the experience. Thank you for shooting us, Sumiko.Foto!

LBC: 3 Favorite Brands and Why

lbc

This week’s prompt is 3 Favorite Brands and Why (Japanese, Taobao, and Indie). It’s really hard for me to pick clear favorites since I always have multiple favorites… but I’ll name the first favorite that pops into my mind from each category!

Favorite Japanese Brand

My favorite Japanese brand is hard to choose, but the first thing that pops into my head is Baby, the stars shine bright! There are so many different designs from BTSSB, and they fit a variety of styles.

Here is my favorite dress from BTSSB in my wardrobe:

I love its simplicity and elegance. The embroidered polka dots are adorable, and the puffed sleeves are perfect. I love the flattering cut of the dress and the double ruffles at the hem. The bow details are lovely too!

Below, you’ll see my favorite BTSSB printed item in my wardrobe:

I just adore the little macarons and cute frosting details. This dress also has a very flattering cut! And, it’s easy to coordinate. I hope I can add more BTSSB items to my wardrobe…

Favorite Taobao Brand

My favorite Taobao brand is probably Chess Story. I only own one item from them, but it’s one of my favorite dresses in my wardrobe. I will NEVER sell this dress (unless something terrible happens and I desperately need money). But I would never willingly sell this beautiful JSK.

The cut is flattering, the color combination is perfect, and the rose print is so crisp! The stripes are an amazing touch as well. This JSK is so wonderfully balanced and looks lovely for both casual wear and OTT coordinates.

I just love wearing this dress! I hope I can get another Chess Story dress at some point in the future…

Favorite Indie Brand

My favorite Indie brand is Lady Sloth! I only ever owned one item from this brand, but I absolutely loved that JSK! Sadly, I sold that JSK already (because I was trying to attain one of my dream dresses). However, if I have the chance, I would love to buy something from Lady Sloth! The designs are so beautiful and elegant. I especially love their gothic-style prints and their art prints!

tumblr_ms5hd15LHA1sv3vjto1_500

The photo above depicts the lovely Lady Sloth JSK I once owned. It was made from a soft, comfy jersey-like material. It was stretchy and partially shirred, and the print was detailed and vibrant. I loved the lace on the hem too! I miss this JSK a lot… Maybe someday I can get a similar JSK from Lady Sloth!

How about you? Do you have favorite lolita fashion brands?
