Reactions to Me Wearing Lolita

Image

“Whoa, what’s going on here? Why are you dressed like that?”

“Little Bo Peep, where are your sheep?”

“You look so cute!”

“Are you a Drag Queen?”

“Mary had a little lamb!”

“Nice cosplay!”

“Why is your skirt so poofy?”

These are just some of the comments and questions I have received while wearing Lolita in public. In my personal experience, people have approached me and asked questions more out of curiosity than in a mean-spirited manner.

There have been a few negative experiences, but I do not want to dwell on them for too long. Here are a few negative experiences I have had while wearing Lolita:

-Stranger Sneakily Takes Photos…-

One day I was helping a friend with her photography assignment. I dressed up in Sweet Lolita (Red Gingham, attempt at a Country Lolita coord), and she took some photos of my on the streets in town.

Image

I did not notice anything suspicious, but my friend noticed something. She came up to me and told me that someone was taking pictures of us without our permission. She called out to the man and asked him, “Don’t you want to ask for our permission first?” He ignored us and just walked away, and I told my friend not to go after him. It was just a small incident after all, and at least he stopped. I do not mind when people want to take photos, but I believe it is proper etiquette to ask for permission first.

-Rude pointing- “HAHAHAHAHA”

Image

Okay, I do not appreciate it when people point at me and start laughing really hard. I know that Lolita fashion is something you may not see everyday, and it is definitely different from “popular fashion,” but it is extremely rude to point at someone and start laughing in an obviously mean-spirited manner. In this situation, I ignored the people laughing and pointing at me and kept walking, keeping my head held high but not making eye contact. I did not know the people who were laughing and pointing at me, so I figured I would probably not see them again. I felt awkward because I don’t like being laughed at (especially since I was bullied a lot in middle school and high school). This was an unpleasant experience, but unfortunately, it is pretty common. Some of my friends said that similar instances of rude laughter were directed at them as well.

Advice: How to deal with negative reactions:

1. Remind yourself why you wear Lolita fashion. You love it, right? Why? Remember why you want to wear it and remind yourself that this is your personal fashion choice. Even if people don’t like what you wear, it is not your problem. Just remember why you like it.

2. Ignore the negative reactions. From my experiences with being bullied and teased in public school, I learned that it is best to ignore negative reactions instead of giving the bullies the benefit of a counter-reaction. Bullies (and rude people) usually want attention. It is best to ignore them.

3. Be confident. Even if you do not feel confident, pretend to be confident. I pretended to be confident when I did not feel confident at all, and this helped me by calming me down and making me feel better.

4. If you are really upset about something that happened, talk about it to friends and/or family! Talking to others and sharing your experiences can help a lot.

5. Remember not to take any insults to heart. Do not let the insults and mean words get to you! If your friends, and not strangers, are insulting you, you should talk to them about how you feel and explain why you wear Lolita fashion. Friends should not be saying mean things to their friends.

There have been lots of stares and some people have thrown insults at me, but there have been positive experiences with wearing Lolita in public as well. Let’s focus on some positive experiences now!

Image

“I haven’t seen someone wear a petticoat since I was a little girl! That’s such a pretty skirt!”

When I was waiting for my ride to my first Lolita meet-up, an elderly woman approached me with a big smile and said this. I smiled back and told her, “Really? Thank you so much!” She then asked me if I was going to a party, and I told her that it was something like that. I explained what Lolita fashion was, and told her that I was heading to a meet-up for people who harbor an interest in this alternative fashion style.

Image

She wished me a good day, and I wished her a good day as well, and then she continued on her walk. This was a positive experience for me because it gave me more confidence while I stood on the sidewalk waiting for my ride. When I was walking from my dorm room to the town center, I had received lots of stares, and I felt embarrassed and awkward. I was also feeling nervous about the meet-up because I was not sure what the community would be like and how I would fit in since it was my first time attending a Lolita meet-up. Now that I have worn Lolita more often in public, I believe that confidence is something you can build over time. I still feel nervous sometimes (mostly about my coordinates), but I no longer feel embarrassed to wear Lolita outside, and I am able to ignore the stares and feel good about myself. I still do not feel comfortable wearing OTT Lolita all by myself, but I can confidently wear OTT in public if I have a friend dressed up in Lolita fashion along with me! Maybe someday I will develop the confidence to wear OTT Lolita style whenever I want, even if I am all alone.

“… Hi! I really like your dress…”

Image

An adorable little girl said this to me one day in a shy voice. She looked like she was only five or six years old, and my heart practically melted on the spot. I smiled brightly to her and said, “Thank you! I like your dress too.” She was wearing a cute pink and yellow floral sundress that was in a similar cut to many JSKs that I’ve seen. (Has anyone else noticed that many dresses for little girls look like adorable JSKs and OPs?) Her mother asked if her daughter could stand next to me for a photo, and I agreed. The little girl looked so happy when she stood next to me; she kept staring at the print on my skirt. I felt happy too; I was really glad that I got to make someone smile! This experience also reminded me of another time… A time when I was cosplaying, and a young girl stared at me and asked if I was a princess. I told her that I was not, but that I was flattered that she thought I looked like one. She looked really surprised and happy to see me there in the mall bathroom. It was not a convention or a cosplay event, but a friend and I wanted to meet up to cosplay at the mall for fun. I wonder if anyone will call me a princess when I am wearing Lolita… That would be an amazing thing.

“Excuse me Miss, you are a walking work of art!”

Image

I was walking downtown dressed in Sweet Lolita to meet a friend, and a man stopped me on the sidewalk to say this to me. I was surprised to hear this since whenever I wear sweet, I tend to get “Little Bo Peep” or “Mary had a little lamb” comments. Sometimes the “Alice in Wonderland” comments come up as well. But I had never heard this comment before! I thanked the stranger and he continued to tell me that he loved the details on the dress. He asked where I got the dress and if it was some sort of new style, and I explained Lolita fashion to him and told him that I had purchased the dress online, secondhand. He said he was amazed that Lolita fashion existed and he thought that there should be Lolita dresses sold in local stores. I replied, “Oh my gosh… I would love it if stores in town carried Lolita dresses!” This would be a dream-come-true for many Lolitas… Imagine that: walking downtown and seeing Lolita dresses displayed in the windows!

Full-out coordinates (So far, from 2013)

Warning: Photo-heavy post ahead!

If you would like to see some of my Casual Lolita coordinates, click here.

I really enjoy planning out Lolita coordinates. Sometimes, I find it difficult, but nevertheless, I always find it fun! I love figuring out which clothing articles to put together, and which accessories to add to the outfit. And then wearing the coordinate is a great feeling too! I used to feel awkward wearing Lolita in public, but now, I have built up more confidence. I can wear casual lolita in public by myself, and I’m fine with wearing over-the-top lolita as long as I have at least one friend with me. Maybe eventually, I’ll build up my confidence even more so I can wear over-the-top lolita on my own in public.

Here are some of my favorite full-out coordinates from this year, so far:

DSCN2419

This is the outfit I wore when I twinned with my friend Megan! ❤ I miss her already. Hopefully we will be able to hang out in Lolita again this coming autumn! (And perhaps we can try to twin again…?) Megan and I also love dancing… and we were thinking of maybe doing Kpop dance covers… in Lolita. (Not sure when that will happen… but maybe sometime in the future if we have time to learn dances and such!)

DSCN2243

Here’s the Sweet Lolita coordinate I wore to a local mall meet-up, featuring a BTSSB cutsew and an AATP skirt. I love the pastel pink and white in this coord! Unfortunately, not all of the whites match… (I find whites really difficult to coordinate… If anyone has advice, please let me know. Thank you in advance!)

DSCN2322DSCN2321

This was my first attempt at a Country Lolita coordinate. I really love the red and white gingham print, and I’m really happy that everything matched up well. The cutsew is from Dear Celine (a Taobao brand), and the skirt is from Angelic Pretty (I snatched it off the comm sales a while ago). I really love the bonnet look, and I hope I pulled it off! There’s one thing that annoys me though… I have red and white wrist cuffs, but I completely forgot about them. They would have matched this coord so well! Next time, I’ll try to remember to wear the wrist cuffs. I can probably work the wrist cuffs into another coordinate as well…

DSCN2124

Above, you can see my friend Megan on the left! We are not twinning in this photo, but we were hanging out in Sweet Lolita coordinates together. I’m wearing a BTSSB babydoll JSK and headbow that I got from the comm sales (I believe the set was originall a lucky pack?). Fun fact: the knee-high socks I am wearing are socks that I’ve had since 5th grade. I’m so glad I’m a pack rat and never gave them away… xD I am not sure how well the blue cardigan matches with my coordinate, but it was chilly outside and I did not want to take off the cardigan. (And the cardigan matched better than my sweatshirts or winter jacket… xD)

The following two coords are quite different, but I used the same wig for both. I really love how this wig looks, and I love how both coords turned out.

DSCN2088

My favorite JSK: the Bertille Rose from Innocent World ❤

024

This coat is really warm and I love the detachable fur collar! Maybe I can use the collar with another coat or jacket? Or maybe even a blouse?

In case anybody is curious, the wig I am wearing is the Empress Collection wig in Chocolate Brown from Gothic Lolita Wigs.

I really love the following coord… and I think it was the first coord I put together that I was proud of. I wore this outfit to my very-first Lolita meet-up! ❤

heart

I still love that bolero too… I found it at a thrift store at such a cheap price! The only annoying thing about it is… how it sheds off feathers. The fluff at the collar and the sleeves are feathers that just love flying everywhere. Those brown platform shoes broke (the soles came off)… but they are fixed now. I’m a bit scared to wear them again though! If I wear them again, I’ll probably only wear them for short periods of time, or bring spare shoes with me just in case something happens to them again.

And here is one of the Customer Coordinate showcases for Gothic Lolita Wigs that I was featured in:

I can’t believe I actually got accepted to the showcase again. >w< The above coordinate was what I wore to the Conbust Lolita Fashion 101 panel. I love the Alice in Wonderland theme of this Bodyline JSK!

I really hope I have made some progress as a Lolita since last year. ❤ I would love to receive feedback and advice from other Lolitas, so please don’t be shy! I appreciate constructive criticism.

Some Casual Coordinates (so far, from 2013)

Warning: Photo-heavy post ahead!

My goal this year was to wear Lolita at least once a week. At the beginning of 2013, I was not doing so well with my goal. But in March, I was able to wear Lolita once every two weeks at least, and in April, I was able to wear Lolita every week, even twice a week at times! ^-^ I hope I can continue to wear Lolita every week, and hopefully I’ll be able to wear it more often as time goes on. (Since I returned home from college though, I was unable to wear Lolita every week. I’ve been busy unpacking, plus I had a convention recently, so I was busy cosplaying. And now I’m busy re-organizing my stuff and cleaning up. But I hope to try wearing Lolita once a month at least, and then work my way back to once a week!)

I’m really happy with the following coordinate, but I threw it together really last-minute to help out a friend with a project for her photography class.

DSCN2225 DSCN2222

I am wearing just a headbow, a Fanplusfriend OP, random white knee socks, and white tea parties. I have minimal accessories, very little makeup (just lip gloss and eyeliner), and a casual wig. Unfortunately, I was really tired and slightly grumpy, so I think the bags under my eyes are pretty bad… But besides that, plus the whites not really matching, I think the coordinate is alright. In the future though, I’ll be folding the large parts of the bow back. The second time I wore this headbow, I folded the top parts back and, in my opinion, it looked better that way.

Above is a photo of what the headbow looks like with the top part of the bow folded to the back. (Photo courtesy of Tasya Ward.)

I’ll post some of my favorite casual coordinates now; feel free to ask questions regarding my coords! I will not be posting full descriptions of every coord.

Here are some of my favorite casual coordinates from this year, so far:

DSCN2194

All offbrand! The blouse was found for $2 from a yard sale, the JSK is from Bodyline, I do not remember where the socks are from (I have had them for a long time), and I believe the shoes are from Marshalls. I love those Mary Jane flats! They’re so comfy and there are built-in arch supports. Oh, and my mom made the belt! ❤

DSCN2191

The JSK is from Taobao’s Chess Story. I love this JSK so much! It’s so comfortable and I love the print. I am also wearing my first wig from Gothic Lolita Wigs in this picture! It’s in the color Wine Red, and I have to say, it is my favorite wig. The hair bow was a hand-me-down from my mom; she used to wear bows when she was my age.

010

Here is what I wore during a late-night study session. It was cold out at the time, so I wore my warm fuzzy hat! The whole coord was black and white themed, and I was wearing my black winter boots. The boots aren’t exactly loliable, but I think they work fairly well. I definitely needed those boots though… The ground was slippery and it was chilly out. :c

002

Here is a casual coord I wore during a particularly spring-y day. I am wearing my favorite color: red. The shoes are darker than my t-shirt’s shade of red, but I still really love those shoes. The coordinate isn’t perfect, but I really enjoyed wearing it.

001

Above is what I wore on Valentines’ Day. The rain boots do not match at all… but it was a rainy day. Lots of puddles. Actually, I don’t even have those rain boots anymore because they ripped and became useless. In any case, I like the blouse and the skirt together, but I don’t like the way the headbow is sitting on my head. I think I might try coordinating this again, but with better shoes, tights, and perhaps wear a wig or re-attach the bow so it sits more flat rather than standing straight up.

More recently, I tried coordinating the above skirt again when some of my college friends and I went to watch Iron Man 3 at the cinema.

DSCN2299

In this casual coordinate, I am wearing a button-down summer blouse (off brand, thrifted) with tattoo tights and my favorite mary-janes. I put my hair in a simple half-ponytail, held by a pink-and-white scrunchie.

DSCN2263

Above is another casual coordinate, using the lovely landscape JSK from Lady Sloth. I paired the JSK with a cream-colored t-shirt, cream socks, and dark brown water-resistant ankle boots. (It was another rainy day. Sorry about the lame mirror shot! I wasn’t able to ask anyone to take a photo of me that day but I wanted to record this casual coordinate.)

International Lolita Day is this Saturday, but I am unable to attend any meet-ups. I will still try to dress up in a Lolita coordinate though! It will probably be a casual coordinate… but I will try my best to dress up in Lolita nevertheless. ^-^

I will try to make another post with my favorite over-the-top coordinates soon!
